Elasto-Gel Hot & Cold Therapy Foot/Ankle Wraps

While undergoing chemotherapy, you may experience numbness or notice changes to your skin or nails which are common side effects of cancer treatment. When cooled, Elasto-Gel’s Foot/Ankle Wraps can help to minimise treatment-induced nerve, skin and nail damage by reducing the blood flow – and in turn the amount of chemotherapy drugs – to the applied areas.

Key Benefits

  • Cold therapy or ‘cryotherapy’ studies have shown to be useful for preventing chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and resultant dysfunction*
  • Flexible design (even when frozen) allows the wrap to be arranged in numerous positions
  • Can stay cold for up to 40 minutes after a 2 hour freezing period

This easy-to-use wrap covers the entire foot and ankle to help reduce inflammation and swelling when cool. Alternatively, this easy-to-use gel wrap can also be warmed to reduce soreness, relax muscles and ease stiffness by improving blood flow to the applied area.

The wrap is comfortably held in place thanks to its hook and loop closures which allow the user to maintain movement during application. This wrap can be used to cover the toes for foot therapy by simply applying the wrap upside down.

Containing specially formulated gel, the therapy wrap is made with a tough yet flexible fabric for long-lasting use.

This product is delivered as a pair of wraps.

For Cold Therapy

  • Before use, place the Elasto-Gel foot/ankle wraps in plastic bags and store in the freezer for a minimum of two hours.
  • Apply the wrap to your feet/ankles 15 minutes before the start of chemotherapy treatment and keep on for the duration of the session until 15 minutes after the treatment has ended.
  • If the treatment is longer than 45 minutes, you may want to have additional wraps on-hand to help keep your feet cold. Make sure to keep extra the wraps frozen until needed - some clinics may have a freezer you can use, or many people also use dry ice to keep the wraps cool.

The wraps may be left indefinitely in the freezer until ready for use – flexibility will remain even at -28°C/-20°F. Remove the product prior to defrosting the freezer.

For Hot Therapy

There are 2 ways to heat the wraps – by using an oven or more conveniently, a microwave.

  • To heat using a microwave: For 600-700 watt microwaves, Elasto-Gel suggests a heating time of 30-45 seconds per side. Please adjust the time accordingly for microwaves with varying power wattage. After heating, wait for 1 minute before use – the product should feel warm to the touch and not hot. Before re-heating, hold the product firmly against the skin for 30 seconds. If the product is not warm enough, heat in 15 second increments and rotate the product each time.
  • To heat using an oven: Place the foot/ankle wrap on a baking tray or oven dish in the centre of the oven and heat for 10-15 minutes at 120°C/250°F. Ensure to keep straps or buckles away from touching any heating elements. Flip over the product after 6 minutes for uniform heating.

Please be conservative with heating as due to the nature of the gel it may only feel warm to the touch but may cause burns if overheated and too much heat is transferred to the body. Additionally some microwaves may heat unevenly and can develop hot spots on the product and become too hot.

Please note:

  • Do not get this product wet as the gel will absorb water and swell. Should this occur, lay it on a flat surface and allow to fully air dry before continuing use. Do not place wet towels under the gel.

Why would I need to use cooling foot/ankle wraps?

Chemotherapy can cause changes to nails and skin as well as nerve damage. This can be a scary and distressing experience for some due to the change in appearance or it can be painful. For people who have had lymph nodes removed from surgery (for example breast cancer and prostate cancer surgery), it is important to keep their nails clean and undamaged as nail infections can cause lymphedema.

How do the cooling foot/ankle wraps work?

During chemotherapy treatment, the chemo drugs enter your blood stream and gets to all your cells via the arteries and veins. By cooling the feet and ankles during treatment, this restricts the blood vessels meaning less blood – and chemo drugs – are carried to your feet and nails. This can help to reduce side effects such as nail, skin and nerve damage in the feet.

Do cooling foot/ankle wraps work for everyone?

Results will vary across users as chemotherapy will affect individuals in different ways. Not all chemo may cause damage to skin, nails and nerves. Always speak to your oncologist or nurse to discuss whether cold therapy wraps will suit or support your treatment.
