Cancer and its treatment – including chemotherapy an radiotherapy – can often cause extremely dry and irritated skin.

From jojoba and coconut to calendula and shea, there are many ways to use natural oils and ingredients to help nourish and soothe your skin. But one oil you may not know about it hemp seed oil.

What is hemp?

Hemp is a plant that actually comes from the same family as the marijuana plant. It can be used to produce rope, fiber, paper, oil (hemp seed oil) and even eco-friendly cars.

What are the benefits of hemp seed oil?

According to research, hemp and hemp seed oil have a wealth of health and nutritional benefits, but we’re particularly interested in how it can help nourish and soothe dry and sensitive skin.

Due to its naturally high levels of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, the hemp oil is an excellent moisturiser and emollient, providing especially useful results for dry skin, nails and even hair.

Are there skincare products that contain hemp seed oil?

Yes! The Carun Active Hemp line is made with hemp seed oil, as well as other nourishing ingredients including shea butter, aloe vera and jojoba.

Why should I use Carun Active Hemp skincare products?

Carun’s Active Hemp product collection contains a wide spectrum of cannabinoids from the plant Cannabis sativa, part of the Cannabis genus and indigenous to Eastern Asia.

The products are designed to nourish and hydrate the skin, with no synthetic fragrances or artificial preservatives, making them suitable for customers who suffer from dryness and breakouts as well as eczema and psoriasis.

This month, Carun appeared on the BBC’s reality TV show Dragon’s Den, securing a £50,000 investment to help them develop their hemp range.

What’s the story behind Carun?

A decade ago, businessman Michal Takac lost three fingers after they were crushed in an industrial printing press, resulting in excruciating pain – and scars. Doctors prescribed him countless drugs and medicated creams but he found little relief.

It was then that he discovered the remarkable healing powers of cannabidiol (CBD), a natural, legal and non-psychoactive cannabis extract. It is one of the hundreds of compounds known as cannabinoids found within the hemp plant. He applied hemp ointment made with CBD to his wounds and rapidly felt the positive effects – scar tissue began to heal, inflammation subsided and the pain was reduced.

The entrepreneur was so impressed that he contacted the supplier, Carun, which is based in Takac’s native Czech Republic. Then he snapped up exclusive rights to sell the company’s products in the UK and Ireland.

Will hemp get me high?

No, consuming hemp seed oil or using beauty products and cosmetics containing hemp seed oil, will not get you high.

In many circles, hemp tends to have a negative connotation, due solely to its association with marijuana. Hemp and marijuana are both products of the cannabis plant, however, there are several notable differences between hemp and marijuana. Marijuana leaves are high in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical that produces the psychoactive effect that marijuana consumption provides.

Hemp, on the other hand, is very low in THC and is most often used for industrial purposes (such as the creation of fabrics, paper, plastics and more) more than for any type of consumption. Hemp contains about 0.3% of THC whereas a cannabis plant cultivated to produce high-quality marijuana might have THC levels as high as 30%.
